Spare Chicken: Scrumptious, Gelatinous and Delicious

Spare chicken covered in delicious gelatinous skin and meat

Sometimes the best meals are the ones nobody else wants.

My sister didn’t want the remaining chicken, which meant there was only one sensible thing to do: claim it for myself.

And honestly, what a result.

What was left might not have looked like a perfectly plated restaurant meal. There were bones, skin, connective tissue, scraps of meat and plenty of wonderfully rich, gelatinous goodness. But that is exactly what made it so satisfying.

The chicken had broken down into soft, tender pieces, with the skin and connective tissue creating that unmistakable jelly-like texture. Every spoonful was rich, savoury and packed with flavour.

The Best Part? The Gelatin

One of the things I love about eating chicken like this is that you don't have to throw away everything except the lean breast meat.

The skin, joints and other less glamorous bits can be absolutely delicious when cooked down properly. The result is soft meat surrounded by a thick, glossy, gelatinous broth that looks almost like chicken jelly once it starts cooling.

It might not win a food photography competition, but taste-wise?

Absolutely scrumptious.

Waste Not, Want Not

There is something satisfying about making the most of food that would otherwise have been ignored.

In this case, my sister passed on the spare chicken, and I happily took the opportunity. More chicken for me.

No fancy ingredients. No complicated recipe. Just leftover chicken, natural juices, fat, skin, connective tissue and all the delicious gelatinous bits that many people would probably overlook.

Scrumptious, Gelatinous and Delicious

Sometimes food doesn't need to look pretty to be enjoyable.

This was messy.

This was rich.

This was unapologetically gelatinous.

And it was delicious.

So, thank you to my sister for not wanting the spare chicken.

I definitely did.
